Viral load testing has been reimbursed in Australia under the Medicare health insurance system since July this year. Federal health minister Dr Michael Wooldridge said that his department would continue to monitor testing patterns to ensure that the new limit remains appropriate to HIV-positive people. Patients who require viral load testing of cerebrospinal fluid will have no restrictions placed by Medicare on the number of tests per year.
