The UN's latest annual figures on the AIDS epidemic show that over the past year 2.5 million people died from the disease, while the total number living with HIV increased to 33.4 million. Sub-Saharan Africa is described as the global AIDS epicentre where there were around four million new cases. In Asia infection rates are much lower, although the disease is beginning to spread across India and China. The rate of new HIV infection in Europe and North America remained stable at around 75,000 per year.
