Executive Summary
Cardiologists have successfully implanted MicroMed Technology's miniaturised heart pump, the first human implant of the device in European clinical trials. The DeBakey ventricular assist device, which is made of biocompatible titanium, is designed to provide an increased blood flow of up to 10 litres per minute to patients with congestive heart failure. Weighing just 93 grams, the device is approximately one-tenth the size of portable heart assist devices currently on the market, said the Woodlands Texas-based company.
