Executive Summary
US scientists have used an imaging technique to determine which patients with blocked carotid arteries are more likely to suffer a stroke. Positron emission tomography was used to identify a subgroup of patients with the most severe stage of impaired oxygen delivery to the brain. The researchers' results, published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (September 23/30), showed that patients in this subgroup were six times more likely to have an overall stroke and seven times more likely to suffer a stroke on one side of the brain.
