Executive Summary
Thailand's Health Minister, Rakkiat Sukthana, resigned last week in the face of mounting political pressure as public concern at the country's hospital supplies scandal grew. Mr Rakkiat, his deputies and other leading Health Ministry officials have been accused of accepting bribes from pharmaceutical and medical supplies companies to ensure their products were sold to hospitals at highly inflated prices (see Clinica No 822, p 6). There have been calls for the Prime Minister, Chuan Leekpai, to take action against the officials allegedly implicated, but he has refused to do so until the results of investigations currently underway are released.
