Executive Summary
A new type of MRI system, which allows a surgeon to perform complex neurosurgery and other procedures while the patient is in the scanner, has been installed at the Neuroscience Institute at the University Hospital in Cincinnati. This is the first time that the Airis II device, made by the US subsidiary of Japanese firm Hitachi, has been installed in a US hospital. Although the open-sided scanner is cleared for US sale, the operating suite must still be approved. Special, non-metallic surgical equipment has to be used in the magnet.
