Executive Summary
Doctors in Germany have developed a way of cooling the brain in patients who have suffered head trauma to prevent brain damage. The University of Heidelberg researchers used an extracorporeal heat exchanger to reduce brain temperature to 32 degrees Celsius within an average of one hour, 53 minutes. In a carefully selected group of eight patients with severe head injuries, the researchers said that the technique significantly benefited three. It is not yet known whether the internal cooling technique is better than conventional surface cooling.
