New equipment worth £23 million ($36.8 million) is being purchased for a hospital in County Dublin in the Republic of Ireland which is due to be opened n June. The hospital, an Anglo/Irish joint venture funded by the Irish government, will later be expanded to provide specialist services. Ireland has a strong healthcare industry with imports in 1996 of medical and surgical equipment totalling IR£185 million ($269 million). The UK is the major supplier, followed by the US and Germany. Irish exports of medical and pharmaceutical products in 1996 reached IR£1.7 billion.
