Executive Summary
Medical device manufacturers in Europe will be able to continue labelling their products in both imperial and metric units until December 31 2009. The European Council of Minister has adopted an amendment to the Units of Measurement Directive, which extends the transitional period for compulsory conformity for a decade. This will be a relief to industry as there were concerns that the amendment would not be formally adopted before January 1 2000, the date the directive was due to take effect. It means that manufacturers will be able to continue using a single label for both the EU and US markets.
