Further backing for HPV (human papillomavirus) screening:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

A team of Scandinavian cancer researchers has provided further evidence that screening for human papillomavirus (HPV) in conjunction with cervical Pap smears would improve detection of cervical cancer. There is a growing body of evidence suggesting that persistent HPV infection causes cancer, and the latest study, in the November 25 edition of the New England Journal of Medicine, researchers led Dr Keng-Ling Wallin of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that a single positive finding of HPV DNA in a Pap smear confers an increased risk of cancer that is positive for the same virus.
