Executive Summary
UK researchers have concluded that testing for the pneumonia causing respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) in the emergency room is viable as well as cost-effective. Some 98 children with symptoms were tested using Abbott's TestPack RSV enzyme immunoassay and the results compared with laboratory immunofluorescence testing. "The positive result of [the Abbott] test is trustworthy and does not require laboratory confirmation but a negative result needs further investigation," the researchers, from the Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Edinburgh, report in the British Medical Journal (July 31).
