Surgical laser manufacturer Trimedyne, of Irvine, California, has received US FDA marketing clearance to sell its OmniTip side-firing laser needle. The minimally-invasive device is principally used to treat herniated lumbar spinal discs by vapourising the protruding part of the disc. It can also be used in arthroscopy, urology, ENT surgery, gynaecology and general surgery.
