Executive Summary
An Austrian research team has backed the use of transurethral microwave thermotherapy as a treatment for painful acute urinary retention in patients with benign prostatic hyperplasia who are not candidates for surgery. Spontaneous voiding ability was restored in 94% of patients within four weeks of undergoing the microwave procedure, according to preliminary data from a 31-patient study carried out at the University of Vienna. Mean peak urinary flow rate was 69% greater at 12 weeks than at one week after the procedure, the team revealed in the July issue of Urology.
