Executive Summary
Roche Molecular Systems has released for sale outside the US an automated version of its PCR-based test for monitoring HIV levels in infected patients. The Cobas Amplicor HIV-1 Monitor test (version 1.5), which the company claims is the first to automate the amplification and detection steps of the PCR process, will improve the accuracy and reliability of results, said the Pleasanton, California-based company. When used with the company's UltraSensitive method, the test can measure levels of HIV RNA down to as few as 50 copies/mL of plasma.
