Executive Summary

Bausch & Lomb, which has identified eye health as its core business, has disposed of its fashion sunglasses businesses, for $640 million and plans to plough some of the profit back into further acquisitions. The company says it will pay off debt in the short term, but will also continue building its eye-care business. In 1997 B&L bought Storz Instruments and Chiron Vision. Its Miracle Aid hearing aid business is also set for disposal before the end of the year.
