Executive Summary
Pharmacia & Upjohn is to use UK company Weston Medical's Intraject needle-free technology for the delivery of heparin under a global licensing deal. The pre-filled system will be available from 2001. London-based Weston's disposable product, which is the size of a pencil, holds a small pressurised canister containing the medication. When a protective cap is removed and light pressure applied to the top of the device, the canister forces the medication painlessly into the tissue. The company estimates that around one million people in the US suffer an injury or infection from hypodermic needles annually.
