Measurement of serum triglycerides provides no additional predictive information in patients at risk from coronary heart disease (CHD) beyond that provided by measurement of serum cholesterol alone, a US study has confirmed. The relationship between serum triglycerides and CHD has remained enigmatic despite 40 years of research. The latest study, published in the July 10 issue of Archives of Internal Medicine, was based on a retrospective analysis of data from three large lipid studies and found that triglyceride measurements did not improve discrimination between subjects who did and did not go on to suffer a myocardial infarct.
