Researchers from the California think-tank RAND briefed members of the US Health Industry Manufacturers Association at the group's annual meeting in Phoenix, Arizona, last month on the results of a new study on how managed care plans decide whether or not to cover new technology. Most do not systematically research promising new products, but instead react to physician and patient demands, prior-authorisation requests and claims submitted without a code, they said.
