Stainless steel stents should be avoided in patients with hypersensitivity to metals or with a history of metal allergy, recommends a team of German cardiologists. The team has found evidence that, in some cases at least, allergic reactions to nickel and molybdenum released from stainless steel stents may be one of the triggers for in-stent restenosis.
