Executive Summary
German surgeons have successfully reconstructed the finger joint of a 36-year-old patient using a tissue engineering approach. BioTissue Technologies, the Freiburg-based company that grew the bone and cartilage tissue in the laboratory, says it is the first time the procedure has been carried out using the patient's own tissue. BioTissue, which plans to launch BioSeed-B, an autologous bone substitute, BioSeed-C (cartilage) and BioSeed-G (mucous membrane of the mouth) next year, already markets BioSeed-S, a skin cell substitute, and MelanoSeed, an autologous pigment cell substitute.
