Radiation prevents blockage recurrence in leg arteries

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

An Austrian study has provided what is claimed to be the first "scientific evidence" to show that intravascular gamma radiation therapy can prevent restenosis after balloon angioplasty in arteries in the leg. Investigators from the University of Vienna General Hospital say that patients who underwent endovascular brachytherapy in addition to angioplasty had a 47% lower incidence of restenosis at six months than those receiving balloon angioplasty alone.
