Executive Summary
France has seen the birth of the country's first genetically selected baby. The child was born at Antoine Beclere hospital, in Clamart, near Paris, one of only three French units authorised to carry out these procedures. Pre-implantation embryo testing and selection is practised in many other countries, including the UK and the US, but France has been hesitant to permit the technique. Local reports say that some 400 couples are at known risk of having a severely handicapped child.
