Executive Summary
Spain last week held a nationwide free glaucoma screening campaign. 1,500 specialists in around 800 centres supported the initiative, with the aim of increasing awareness of the importance of early diagnosis in tackling the disease. Ophthalmotonometry - the measurement of intraocular pressure - can provide an early indication of the potential onset and extent of glaucoma, which is the main cause of blindness in Spain. The condition is avoidable if treated early. Screening for glaucoma should be performed routinely as part of every eye-sight test from around 35-40 years of age, Spanish ophthalmological experts believe.
