Women not covered by Dow Corning's $3.2 billion silicone breast implant settlement may not sue the company's joint parents, Dow Chemical and Corning, district judge Denise Page Hood ruled on November 13. Her decision overturned a December 1999 ruling (see Clinica No 890, p 9) and clears the way for claimants to receive compensation. Lawyer Jeff White opposes the latest ruling and says more appeals lie ahead. The settlement amount was reserved for the more than 170,000 women who said the implants provoked various health problems. 94% of the women, who last year voted for a course of action, approved the Dow Corning settlement plan. Dow Corning stopped manufacturing the implants in 1992.
