Executive Summary
A large prostate does not preclude a patient from receiving brachytherapy for prostate cancer, according to a US study. Patients with large prostate volumes are usually given hormonal therapy to shrink the prostate before brachytherapy or are advised against undergoing the procedure. However, writing in the International Journal of Cancer (August 20th), Dr Kent Wallner of the Department of Veterans Affairs in Seattle, Washington says that, in a study of 33 patients, prostate reduction had no effect on response to brachytherapy.
