Thyroid radiation and breast cancer may be related:

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Premenopausal women undergoing irradiation for thyroid cancer may be at increased risk of developing breast cancer. In a presentation last week at American Academy of Otolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery in Washington, DC, Dr Amy Chen, of the MD Anderson Cancer Center of the University of Texas, said that an epidemiological study of nearly 300,000 women found that women with thyroid cancer, particularly those aged between 30 and 34, were more likely to subsequently develop breast cancer. The researchers speculate that radioactive iodine used to treat thyroid cancer may also be taken up by breast tissue.
