Executive Summary
The US FDA has approved VIASYS Healthcare's high frequency oscillatory ventilator for treating acute respiratory failure in adults and large children. The SensorMedics 3100B device uses higher distending pressures than conventional ventilators to open the diseased lung units and improve the delivery of oxygen, says the Conshohocken, Pennsylvania firm. It then uses very rapid, small breaths to remove carbon dioxide, thereby reducing injury to the lungs. A paediatric version of the device was launched in 1991.
