Executive Summary
The European Commission has published a White Paper proposing that a food authority should be set up by 2002 just as food safety matters are being transferred to the new Health and Consumer Protection Directorate under Commissioner David Byrne. These could be the first steps towards creating a European FDA as potentially, drugs and devices could move to the health directorate. Drugs and devices are currently regulated by DG Enterprise, as was the case for food.
