Executive Summary
ATS Medical is to buy a technology licence from Sulzer Medica's subsidiary Sulzer Carbomedics for $41 million to manufacture the pyrolytic carbon and metal components for the ATS mechanical heart valve. ATS will continue to buy components, at a reduced level, from Sulzer Carbomedics under an OEM agreement until the end of 2007. "We have recognised for a long period of time that it would be necessary to control our destiny and make our own carbon if we are to accomplish our goal of being number one in the heart valve business," said Manny Villafana, chairman and CEO of ATS.
