Dr Wolfgang Eckert, chairman of the association of the regional office of statutory health insurance physicians in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern last week opened fire on health minister Ulla Schmidt's indifferent attitude towards doctors in the states of the former East Germany. Commenting on a study undertaken by the central institute for statutory healthcare in the federal republic of Germany, he said: "We [in east Germany] have more illness than the west and less money to treat it. Ulla Schmidt cannot continue to treat doctors and patients from the east in this manner."
