Danish health minister Arne Rolighed said last week that the country must encourage foreign doctors to come to Denmark as they were an important factor in maintain the quality of the Danish health system. The statement comes after a week of protests against the number of Swedes studying medicine in Denmark. Despite attempts to restrict the number of foreign students from Sweden, their number has risen from 133 to 166 within a year. The number of places to study medicine has, however, also risen, by 53 to 1,119. Mr Rolighed did, however, concede that a meeting between the Swedish and Danish authorities will take place next year to discuss measures to restrict the number of Swedish medical students in Denmark.
