Sweden to spend more on health to cut waiting lists

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

Sweden needs to inject more money into its health service if waiting lists are to be shortened. This is the conclusion drawn by the Swedish newspaper Goteborgs Posten after a survey of the country's hospitals. Waiting times, it conceded, were often a regional problem and the capital, Stockholm, offered the speediest treatment. Whereas a patient in need of a cataract operation at Stockholm's Europa Clinic would have to wait six weeks, this corresponded to 150 weeks in Molndal, immediately south of Gothenburg. A hip replacement at Sabbatsberg Clinic in Stockholm could be carried out in six weeks compared with 156 weeks at Gotheburg's Ostra Clinic.
