Myriad Genetics (Salt Lake City, Utah) has been awarded a US patent for its microfluidic passive fluid dynamics technology and has licensed the patent rights to BioMicro Systems. Unlike conventional active systems that require sound, electricity or mechanical valves to control the movement of fluid, passive fluid control devices use constrictions in the microchannels to regulate the flow of liquids in microfluidic devices. BioMicro says the technology can be used to develop diagnostic products as well as products for use in genomic and drug discovery research.
