Executive Summary
Elevated levels of two inflammatory proteins, C-reactive protein (CRP) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), may indicate an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, according to US researchers. Following suggestions that inflammation plays a role in the development of type 2 diabetes, Paul Ridker and colleagues at Harvard Medical School in Boston, Massachusetts, studied the levels of CRP and IL-6 in 27,628 women and followed them over a four-year period. 188 women developed type 2 diabetes, and among these, baseline levels of CRP and IL-6 were significantly higher than among those who did not.
