Testing for two markers of inflammation could help doctors make an early diagnosis of sepsis in newborns, according to a study in Pediatrics (July). The markers CD11b and IL-8 (interleukin 8) were found to be present at low levels in the blood of healthy infants, but at high levels in all but three infants with neonatal sepsis. Neonatal sepsis is a life-threatening infection that affects as many as 1% of newborns, according to study leader, Dr Irmeli Nupponen, of the University of Helsinki.
