Executive Summary
The UK's first clinic devoted specifically to the diagnosis and treatment of prion diseases has been opened in London. The centre, headed by John Collinge of St Mary's Hospital, will work in close collaboration with the prion unit of the Medical Research Council, based at Imperial College London, which has launched a "major" research programme in this area. During his presentation of the centre at the World Congress of Neurology, held last week in London, Professor Collinge announced that the new clinic will offer a full range of diagnostic facilities including molecular genetic analysis and tonsil biopsy. Brain imaging and other tests will be provided to outpatients, with a neurological ward available for further investigations.
