The life-saving benefits of early defibrillation are not being maximised in the UK. A survey conducted recently at Southampton General Hospital showed a remarkably low level of knowledge of correct defibrillation procedures. Investment in automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) could be suffering as a consequence of the apparent reduction in clinical effectiveness of the technology.
