Executive Summary
The Brazilian health surveillance agency, Anvisa, is preparing to launch this month a national survey of hospital-acquired infection (HAI). The initiative is part of a wider drive to strengthen controls and ultimately to cut costs by, for example, reducing the use of antibiotics. It will run until May 2002 and involve around 3,000 of the country's 7,000 or so hospitals.
