German chancellor finds no consensus in gene technology debate

This article was originally published in Clinica

Executive Summary

"There are an estimated 100 embryos stored in Germany. The law allows artificial fertilisation only in order to create a pregnancy, but these embryos no longer have this function. The question is simply what will happen to them? Discarding them cannot be justified, therefore does it not make more sense to use them for limited research?" These were the words of German chancellor Gerhard Schroder (SPD) as he appealed to members of the lower house (Bundestag) during the foundation debate on gene technology.
