Executive Summary
The diagnosis and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), an area of growing interest, is currently the subject of several research projects funded by the UK Department of Health. Funded through the Medical Research Council, these include studies into the genetic susceptibility to the disease, which has received a £1.5 million ($2.1 million) grant. A clinical trial assessing radiotherapy in the treatment of subfoveal neovascular membranes in AMD is also underway at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast.
