Executive Summary
The US FDA has cleared for sale Orthofix International's internal limb-lengthening device. The ISKD (intramedullary skeletal kinetic distractor) system consists of a telescoping tubular structure that is implanted inside the bone to be lengthened. It uses a magnetic sensor to monitor limb-lengthening progress on a daily basis. Once lengthening is complete, the system stabilises the lengthened bone. Orthofix, of Huntersville, North Carolina, estimates that the market for the ISKD device is worth around $50 million.
