Executive Summary
A US team claims it is the first to grow human tissue using stem cells harvested from fat. The findings could render obsolete the controversial use of foetal tissue, said team leader Marc Hedrick of the University of California, Los Angeles. He said that fat is the first practical, plentiful and economic source of stem cells, which could be used to grow a variety of human tissue in the laboratory. The team obtained the fat using liposuction. The work is published in Tissue Engineering (April).
