A US team has discovered that a genetic variation of the G-protein beta3 (GNbeta3) gene, which has already been linked with hypertension, could increase the risk of stroke in white people. Researchers found that the GNbeta3 825C/T form of the gene was associated with a 1.5 times increased risk of stroke. This association was independent of blood pressure levels and hypertension status, Eric Boerwinkle from the Human Genetics Center at the University of Health Science Center in Houston reports in Stroke (April). Patient and control groups were selected from the 16,000-patient ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities) trial.
