"Disguising" a contrast agent as a peptide could dramatically improve the agent's sensitivity and specificity for detecting breast cancer. Such is the theory of a US research team, which is developing a hand-held, near-infrared sensor to pick up signals released by the agent when enzymes in malignant cells break down the peptide. The method of detection could "far exceed all other imaging modalities", team leader Britton Chance of the University of Pennsylvania, told Clinica.
