Executive Summary
The Austrian society for orthopaedics and orthopaedic surgery is to establish an endoprosthesis register. The register will be based on a model currently employed in Scandinavia and will be used to record the effects on patients of using endoprostheses. Access will be made available to all hospitals and clinics and will allow a greater level of quality control in orthopaedic surgery, by making patient data readily available. Each year 10,000 artificial hips and 6,000 artificial knee joints are newly implanted in Austria. In addition to this, 2,000 hip and knee endoprostheses are replaced.
