Executive Summary

A US team has developed an automated prostate cancer brachytherapy planning system which it claims can optimise placement of radioactive seeds in patients in minutes. The technology uses a three-dimensional optimisation algorithm, which is more "sophisticated" than the corresponding component in other therapy planners, system designer Eva Lee told Clinica. A 20-patient trial of the product has shown positive results, says Dr Lee of the Georgia Institute of Technology, who expects to file the product with the US FDA for approval within a year.
