Executive Summary
Encore Orthopedics has received US FDA 510(k) clearance to market its metal acetabular insert for use with artificial hip joints. The insert is used with the Encore FMP Acetabular Shell and any of Encore's hip stems, and replaces the polyethylene inserts used in traditional artificial hips. Wear of the polyethylene acetabular lining is a major cause of implant loosening. The Austin, Texas company, a subsidiary of Encore Medical, claims it is one of only a few companies to offer such a product. It is also developing a ceramic/ceramic hip joint and a ceramic knee femoral component.
