Sporadic contamination of Sulzer Medica's Inter-Op hip shells manufactured after October 1999, when the company brought production in-house, has prompted a voluntary recall of some 25,000 units, predominantly in the US. The company says that 17,500 have been implanted. The recall was initiated by Sulzer's Austin, Texas-based subsidiary, Sulzer Orthopedics.
