The Portuguese health ministry has launched a campaign to increase awareness of the need to detect breast cancer at an early stage, with the aim of improving treatment outcomes. Around 35% of cases currently present at an advanced, incurable stage, according to Dr Fleming de Oliveira, head of the mammary pathology unit at the Unidade Locale de Saude de Matosinhos health centre. As part of the campaign, the health ministry is also renewing calls for women aged over 50 years undergo mammography at least once every one or two years. Women at higher risk of the disease should be screened from the age of 40, it says.
