Executive Summary
The UAE last week began a concerted initiative to reduce the number of breast cancer cases in the country. The project, set up by the ministry of health's central department of maternal and child health, and the health committee of the Abu Dhabi Women's Union, is aimed at raising awareness about the disease, particularly amongst the younger generation. Under the scheme, women aged over 20 will be eligible for a complete check-up, which includes tests for blood pressure, blood sugar and body fat. Women over 40 will also be referred to the Al Nahyan Hospital for a mammogram, reports the Gulf News. Breast cancer currently causes some 20% of all female deaths in the UAE.
